Learning Goal: to consider oral presentation skills
1. Ted Talk Play List
- with a partner, use your phones to look at this list of Ted Talks by people under 20
- there are a variety of topics so watch a couple and choose one or two that interest both of you
- when you find the one or two you like, think about the following:
-> how the person speaks
-> how clearly they express their ideas
-> their mannerisms (are they appropriate, distracting?, etc.)
-> what are they saying?
-> how are they backing up their ideas?
-> could they use other ideas for better support? why or why not?
-> how do they engage the audience?
-> how are they using their voice?
-> do they have any visuals? if so, what are they and are they effective? why or why not?
2. Reflection Writing (Individual)
- on a piece of paper or Google Docs on your phone, please think about your strengths and areas for improvement when it comes to presenting in front of a group
- what do you do well?
- what can you improve upon?
- what are some strategies you can use to improve your skills? (if you don't know, feel free to research on the web)
3. Video Selection
- for this task, I want you to spend some time with the world's most active teacher -> YouTube
- look for a video that explains the skills of oral presentations in an entertaining and engaging fashion (it can be funny but remember that this is school so appropriate to the classroom of course!)
- look for a video that depicts people making poor decisions related to oral presentation skills (appropriate to the classroom of course!)
- be prepared to share your videos with me when I return tomorrow
